On Wednesday, June 5th, from 4-5pm the Department of French & Italian Studies held a graduation for the graduating class of 2024. French majors and Italian minors were invited to celebrate their achievements in a reception held in the Simpson Center. We are very pleased to announce the winners of the fourth annual French & Italian Studies Academic Awards! All students who have enrolled in a French & Italian Studies course during the 2023-2024 academic year were eligible to submit a final project completed in a FIS course. Examples of submissions could be translations, well-written and researched papers, or other creative projects that exhibit innovation (in any format or medium). Alice Bruil, a Global & Regional Studies major with a concentration in Africa and Health & the Environment and minors in both French and Global Health has been named as a recipient of the Boren Undergraduate Scholarship for 2024-2025! Alice is one of just two UW students selected for this award which provides funding opportunities for U.S. students to study languages and world regions critical to U.S. interests. On March 12, 2024, French Ambassador to the United States Laurent Bili visited the University of Washington and Seattle. During his visit, French & Italian Studies faculty member Richard Watts was invited to join the Ambassador and the team from the French Consulate of San Francisco for lunch. Dr. Sarah-Kate Moore, a current graduate student in the French MA program, presented her MA thesis on Wednesday, May 29th. Her project is a translation of the first ten poems of Le tendon et l'os [Tendon and Bone, 2019] by Québécoise author Anne-Marie Desmeules. On April 8, 2024, the L'Italo Americano newspaper published an article discussing our department's newest study abroad program. On Saturday, April 20th, the College of Arts & Sciences hosted a variety of events for Admitted Student Day 2024. During this day, recently admitted Freshman students to the UW are invited to campus to explore, learn about our programs, and meet other huskies!
