On Monday, June 9th, our two graduating Masters in French students presented their final projects to French & Italian Studies faculty, staff, and family members. As part of the Masters in French program, students are expected to complete a capstone project under the guidance of a faculty advisor who best fits their area of expertise. The two graduating MA students of 2025, Emy Chevalier and Madeleine Poole, each gave 30 minute presentations on their presentations.
Emy Chevalier, advised by Professor Hedwige Meyer, presented her capstone project titled Shuni, Amour, Affirmation et Réconciliation. In her project, Chevalier examined the book Shuni, ce que tu dois savoir Julie (Shuni, What You Need to Know Julie) by Naomi Fontaine. In her capstone project, Emy examined the themes of Shuni, exploring topics of colonialism, racism, education, and intercultural dialogue between the Innu and white Quebecers.
Madeleine Poole, advised by Professor Geoffrey Turnovsky, completed her project titled Les Anciens et Les Modernes: Examining the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns Through Literature and Historical Documents. Approaching the project from an angle of teaching pedagogy, Madeleine prepared a syllabus for a hypothetical course on the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. The syllabus included a complete reading list and analysis of different teaching methods, assignments, and course construction.
The department would like to congratulate both Emy Chevalier and Madeleine Poole on the successful presentation of their capstone projects!
