UW Senior, and French and Linguistics double major, Martin Horst was nominated by the Department French & Italian Studies for a Lederman Humanities Scholarship. The Dean's Office has offered him the $5,000 scholarship, but Martin will have to turn it down - but for good reason! Martin explains below:
"Starting in September 2015, I will be participating on a research project through the University of Washington Linguistics Department which will take place in Madrid, Spain. Conducted with coordination between the UW’s Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences (I-LABS) and the Spanish Ministry for Culture, Education, and Sports, this project will involve taking language measurements of Spanish preschoolers while teaching them English in a classroom setting. Fifteen other UW students (or alumni) and I were lucky enough to be accepted to this program, which will afford us the opportunity to expand our knowledge of Spanish culture and gain practical research experience. Though I was thrilled to be nominated for the Herman S. and Dorothy B. Lederman award, the nature of the I-LABS program will prevent me from accepting it. Nevertheless, I am honored to represent the French and Italian Department through my nomination!"
Congratulations to Martin on this exciting opportunity! Best of luck and well done!
