French Major Martin Horst Presents Honors Thesis at the Cornell Undergraduate Lingustics Colloquium

Submitted by Michael Rich on

Martin Horst, a French and Linguistics double major presented a research poster for his French Honors Thesis  at the Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (CULC) in Ithaca, New York on April 29-30. Martin's thesis explores the interplay of language attitudes and national identity in Moroccan students. Martin gathered research and conducted interviews with Moroccan students while studying abroad at Al Akhawayn University.  Martin was able to attend the Colloqium in part due to funding from the Department of French & Italian Studies. He also presented on the same project at the UW Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium on Friday, April 28.

These experiences were very helpful in refining the scope of his project and how he believes he can improve it going forward. He especially enjoyed meeting faculty and students from Cornell and around the nation at CULC, and appreciated hearing feedback from FIS faculty and the linguistics faculty as well. Martin says he "could not have done this project without French because I collected data in French, in a French speaking locale!" He hopes to build on this research going forward and continue this project in graduate school.
