Pull up a chair and share un petit café with a quintessential figure in the French imagination. From Montaigne and Sartre to Rousseau and Barthes, this class will explore the emergence and evolution of the idea of the public and the role of the intellectual in French society.  Walk away with an understanding of writers and thinkers spanning the Renaissance and the Enlightenment through modernity and the post-modern turn and how they continue to shape public discourse in France today.
